Hurry up and wait

We had one foot out the door ready to start our adventure. Our bags were fully packed and ready for a taxi pickup at 6am. The refrigerator purged of all perishable food, the house was cleaned and we were at a friends birthday party combined with a farewell party with close friends. Then, I checked my phone and saw this:

Hurricane Dorian heading to our new home

We reached out to one friend on the island, and one who grew up on the islands, and they said not to worry about it, it was just a tropical depression at the time, and even if it turns into a hurricane it isn't a powerful one (Cat 1). On the other hand, there was nothing urgent we needed to be there for and I wasn't comfortable touching down in St. John to a house with no food and barely any of our things (like First Aid Kid) and then trying to get the basics setup in a place we haven't gotten to know our way around yet. Not to mention that this is not the type of first day I wanted for the kids: "Hey kids welcome to our new home, guess what? A hurricane is coming!". So, we spoke with our landlord and agreed to be prudent and postpone our arrival for another week.

Luckily Delta changed our flights and waived the fee with no hassle and our landlord will handle the house if the storm hits. So, we are still in the northeast another week!

I know hurricanes are part of island life, I do feel a little bit like a wimp for not going and we likely would have been OK, but I think we made the right call for our family...

Note: This morning the storm seems to be petering out and it does not look like Virgin Islands will be affected.

Better to be safe than sorry, especially starting a new adventure.
